the noble savage - one of the most popular stereotypes of the indigenous people of the Americas in the US - does not exist. In this lecture, I discuss Indigenous Genocide & Suicide, Cultural Appropriation, Revolutions from the American Indian Movement at Wounded Knee, Standing Rock and the Reservation structure. I also share important insights on indigenous food and spirituality, and the way that the label 'Latino' is used to erase and assimilate indigenous communities. 'I am dancing to the beat of a different drum' focuses on understanding the connection between the past and the present and works to decolonize the imagination of indigenous communication.

many people of color have been cut off from our roots, had our culture stolen and forbidden, and our strength taken away. All of our energy goes into surviving daily life as Trans*people of color. In this workshop, we will explore reconnecting to our roots, the culture in our blood & bones, and our ancestors to regain our power. I invite us to share our spirituality with one another. Let us feel free to overcome the shame brought to us by white supremacy. The shame that keeps us from being who we really are. We welcome you on our reservation here created for and by us. Together we will enter the world of feeling and trust in our bodies & souls. Let’s take the risk without knowing what will happen…feel free to bring your drum, flute, or personal items.
